School Resource Officers & Detective Training
The Great Falls Police Community Foundation is committed to the men and women in uniform who work tirelessly 365 days a year to protect our citizens and make our community the safest in the state. Sadly, as we all know, we have seen an increase in crimes against children in our community to include sexual assault and homicide. I have spoken to the administration about what can be done to better prepare our officers to be proactive in addressing this issue. It has become apparent that training is the cornerstone to addressing community needs, and who better to train then our own School Resource Officers/Detectives who daily work and protect our children and teens of Great Falls.
In July of 2015, in Orlando Florida, the National Association of School Resource Officers is hosting a five day national conference. This conference is designed to bring thousands of School Resource Officers (SRO) from around the country together to train and learn cutting edge plans and procedures on both proactive and reactive programs designed around protecting our kids and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
This training has not been done with the Great Falls Police Department in close to a decade. As we all are acutely aware, city management has reduced the Great Falls Police Department training budget to almost non-existent levels. This training will not be cheap, but in the same breath what is the cost to our community for the assault, rape or death of one child, much less many.
The Great Falls Police Community Foundation is currently raising funds necessary to send the SRO’s to the conference and let them network, train and come back with cutting edge ideas and programs that could put a stop to the suffering in our community. What a better way to help prevent, eradicate child deaths, rapes and partner family assaults in our community by assisting our School Resource Officers in getting this much needed training.
